The best
Lake Mead fishing tips come from the
local pros. How would you like to have a catch like this?

These beauties were caught near Willow Beach Marina on the
Colorado River just below Lake Mead which is the upper end of Lake Mohave. Knowing what the fish like to eat, the time of day they're
hungry, and the time of month (no moon) all contribute to takes like this.
The pros know it all and you can learn those tricks. We have a
list of guides in our Services, Guides, and Instructors
page.
LAKE MEAD
FISHING
Wintertime:
From November through February timeframe you find crappie and bass
fishing to at depths of 25 to 40ft. Fishing is at it's peak this time of
year for good sized crappie. Fishing in coves are effective at angling
near shear cliffs, vertical walls where the fish cruise the lake
perimeter walls.
Springtime: From the March to May timeframe as waters start to
warm up the bass and striped bass hang out in coves at depths of 10 to
25ft. You'll also see bluegill flourish during this time.
Anchovy is a favorite bait for stripers.
Summertime: From June through
August the bass and catfish are prime targets. Bluegill are also
good fun for kids to fight and pull in for good entertainment.
Stripers are still viable but at much deeper depths where the water is
colder around 35ft.
Fall: From September through
November as the water starts to cool down you find stripers and crappie
in shallow depths of 10 to 20ft. Bass fishing is good through
October but dies off until Springtime.
Lake Mohave offers an
excellent environment for fishing in the upper lake areas where the lake
is actually a river coming out of Hoover Dam. The river current
and cooler water temperatures offer a more consistent environment that
fish love. The water coming out of Hoover dam is 53°F
year round, much colder than Lake Mead from March to Nov. The
water warms up as it travels toward the body of Lake Mohave for the next 15-20mi
south from Hoover
dam. These areas offer excellent fishing year round due to cool
waters. The narrow walls of
the Colorado river and high walls of the river canyon limit the suns
ability to warm
the moving water until it reaches the great Lake Mohave areas where the water
slows down to crawl and is open to sunlight. Lastly, the current of the
river is a natural environment for trout and bass.
You'll notice there's
a fishing hatchery located at Willow Beach Marina just 9mi downriver from Hoover
Dam. This location was obviously chosen for it's ideal water
temperature of the river for raising trout, hence ideal for fishing too.
The best part is the regular fish planting of trout that occurs at
Willow Beach on Fridays right near the launch ramp. That may be
good time to be in the neighborhood with your pole ;-)
With
the new bridge being built to cross the Colorado River near Hoover dam
it will eventually be convenient to access Willow Beach marina from the
Vegas area. Sometimes the traffic to cross Hoover dam can be slow
during peak tourist times. The bridge is due for completion in
2010 and it's expected to cut the drive 15 to 45 minutes depending on
the time of year to drive to Willow Beach marina from Las Vegas.
For visitors coming from Phoenix the Willow Beach marina is an ideal
fishing destination, 30-45 minutes closer than Lake Mead.
Wintertime:
You'll find the trout fishing this time of year to be excellent.
Fishing planting helps but the colder environments on moonless nights
usually offers great fishing in the early morning hours. Stripers
are also good in this area at depths of 10 to 20ft near cliff areas and
coves. Bass fishing is also good in the wintertime.
Springtime and
Summertime: Catfish, stripers are still good in the northern
areas of Lake Mohave where the water continues to be fairly cool. Bass
fishing improves as waters slightly warm during this timeframe south of
Willow Beach. Trout takes fall off as the air temps rise during
this timeframe.
Fall: As
the air temperatures cool down the trout take begins to improve.
Bass takes fall off as the water gets slightly colder but crappie takes
improve. Stripers usually are found deeper at about 25-40ft this
time of year until Winter sets in at which time they come up to the 10-
to 20ft depths.
